The drive takes us through the famous Luwero triangle and on to the rhino sanctuary in Nakasongola which is privately owned. This sanctuary was established to breed rhinos and hopefully return them to their natural habitat. This mammal is among the largest on land and is extinct in natural habitats of Uganda. The breeding efforts are important to their restoration and your entrance fee to the sanctuary contributes to the conservation efforts of Uganda. If time allows, we will drive to the top of Murchison Falls and then continue to our lodge. As we drive to the lodge, you will realize that this park has a variety of vegetation ranging from riparian and tropical rain forests, marshes to broad savannahs which are both wooded and grassland, all of which harbor different wildlife including lion, leopard, Genet cat, Jackal, African Civet, Hyena, African Elephant, Crocodile, Giraffe, Cape Buffalo and Hippo. Also, in this area are primates that mostly live in the southern sector of the park and the great birds. Dinner and overnight at Kabalega wilderness Lodge or Equivalent (full board)

Chimpanzees are found by listening for their pant-hooting calls, looking for the fresh nests where they spent the previous night and the direction of knuckle/foot prints as they walk out of the nests. The other primates located in the area include the red colobus monkey, black and white colobus monkey, red-tailed monkey, Blue L’hoest’s monkey and the Grey-cheeked Mangabey. In the afternoon enjoy a guided nature walk through the Bigodi wetland sanctuary and visit the women’s crafts project KAFRED. A late afternoon game drive will likely spot these lions. Dinner and overnight at Ishasha Jungle Lodge or Equivalent. (full board)

Day 8: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

In the morning at 7:30am, you will assemble at the park headquarters for a briefing. During the briefing, you will learn how to act around gorillas and the history of the Park. A packed lunch is provided for your day of tracking. You will be paired with a guide and group of scouts. A short drive will take you to the start of the hike. Expect to walk for at least 30 minutes and as much as 4 hours to find the family of gorillas assigned to the group. Most of the treks are on paths, but if the gorillas are “off trail” your guides will help you maneuver using their machetes to make a new path. Porters may be hired (additional charge) to carry back pack and help with walking. Once sighted, the group will observe the gorilla family for 1 hour. After the observation time, hike back to starting point. If time allows, an evening community walk is offered to learn how the people living near the gorillas go about their daily business. Dinner and overnight at Bakiga Lodge or equivalent.
